Public Libraries in the Information Society

Publication, country reports, case studies and workshop

Updated: 20 FEB 98

Introduction

A consortium consisting of the Danish Library School , the Danish Library Authority and the Deutsches Bibliotheksinstitut started in December 1995 to conduct a study on Public Libraries and the Information Society on behalf of the European Commission DG XIII/E-4.

The study looked at the challenges for public libraries in Europe in establishing their role in the Information Society. It aimed at accelerating the process of change on different levels by analysing the needs, the types of possible services, the barriers and the opportunities in different types of European communities. Relevant experiences and developments in public libraries outside the European Union have been taken into account. The study developed a well argued visionary strategy for the public library community on how to deal with the challenges of the Information Society. It defined models and scenarios that offer public libraries practical guidance, coupled with recommendations to the European Commission for actions in support of the modernisation of public libraries in Europe.
