Summary of Project:

A trans-national Common Interest Group has been formed to develop a new commercial image reproduction service specialising in fine art, applied and decorative visual arts and multimedia\video artworks for use within both conventional, paper-based, and electronic publishing industry.

The consortium comprises four partners based in three member states including (a) a leading picture library with an established international market, (b) two information services both having a recognised national remit for the promotion of contemporary visual art using multimedia networked systems, and (c) a major book publisher with an interest in electronic publishing.

The aims of the project are two-fold. First, to pilot the development of a new commercial image reproduction service in which all aspects of image sourcing, user selection, delivery, administration and copyright licensing are handled via established telecommunications networks linking the entire chain of agents, picture libraries and end-users (publishers). Second, to further define the user requirement for the service by a comparison of customisable delivery mediums including ISDN, CD-ROM and conventional imaging technologies and, by doing so determine market variables for the implementation of the service such as price sensitivity, user preference for artwork content, and the level of potential demand for contemporary art images and multimedia \ video \ sound as a resource for the emerging electronic publicationa market.
