TABLE OF CONTENTS

CONTENT OF EURODICAUTOM

The EURODICAUTOM database hosted on ECHO has served its users since 1973 in being an invaluable multilingual source for the definition of terms and abbreviations. EURODICAUTOM is best described as an on-line terminology database which contains translations of scientific and technical terms, contextual phrases and abbreviations in all official languages of the European Union.

During the latter half of 1995 much work was done behind the scenes of the database in preparation for the upgrading of the retrieval language as well as for the incorporation of two new languages into the database files - Finnish and Swedish. The database is produced by the Translation service of the European Commission (EC), meaning that it is constantly updated with new terms and abbreviations found by EC translators during their work. It currently contains definitions for more than 4 500 000 terms and 180 000 abbreviations. The number of translated terms and abbreviations are distributed evenly throughout the languages.

EURODICAUTOM was one of the first databases to be hosted on ECHO and is one of our most popular databases. Its vast range of terms and abbreviations, coupled with its user friendly retrieval language (CALL EDIC), developed by the EC's translation service means that it is fast and effective to use.

This database is updated regularly.

STRUCTURE OF THE DATABASE

1. Terminology

A typical terminology entry, consisting of terms, definitions, sources, subject codes and other additional information looks like this:

When looking for a translation of a term the most interesting fields are the following:

Insertion date in the database
CM
The subject code of the term
CF
The reliability code (Entries in the database are classified according to the reliabilty of the translation.
Terms and abbreviations range on a scale from 0 to 5. If the document is encoded with CF 5 it is the official EC translation).

EXAMPLES OF SEARCHES

A - QUERY LANGUAGE

EURODICAUTOM is a special database using the EC's translation service retrieval language (CALL EDIC), not the CCL. If you access online, choose the database at ECHO prompt ("?").
User types:
? base eu92

System replies:

BASE COMMAND ACCEPTED FOR EU92;EURODICAUTOM;LAST-UPDATE=31.07.1995 **************************************** *
E U R O D I C A U T O M * **************************************** For detailed information
on EURODICAUTOM, please type : "INFO EURODICAUTOM". Please type "CALL EDIC" to begin your search. User types:
? call edic Sytem replies (you receive the prompt (*) to choose for terminoly or abbreviations):
PRESS L FOR TERMINOLOGY, X FOR ABBREVIATION User types: *l es a
And you will be in the Eurodicautom database.

A new, upgraded version of the CALL EDIC retrieval language was made available to users at the beginning of 1996.

The database is divided into two subsets of information, namely terminology and abbreviations. Once logged on to the database the user is asked to choose between the two options. If the user types L he/she will access the terminology section of the database whilst typing X will provide access to the abbreviation section.

Terms or abbreviations found by the user will appear in order of decreasing relevance - i.e. information most closely related to the question is displayed first, further replies appearing subsequently.

As an enhancement to the retrieval language, the user is now able to see the number of the document which relates to the query. If the document is longer than one screen the user no longer has to type "C" to continue, but simply has to press the carriage return (enter) key.

Specifying languages

Whilst searching for specific terms or abbreviations, you may decide that you simply want the records displayed in certain languages. If, for example, you want to search for translations of terms from Spanish into German and Danish simply type: and the system will display documents in the German and Danish languages only.

The previous version of the query language required the user to commence every query by typing "Q" after the asterisk sign. This is no longer necessary in the terminology section but is still required for the abbreviation section.

On-line assistance

Help can be obtained at any moment during your on-line search by typing "H" at the asterisk.

User types:

System replies:

COMMANDS AVAILABLE NOW L : LANGUAGES X : ABBREVIATION E : SESSION END F : PARAMETERS S : SUBJECT CODE
U : USER PROFILE D : FIXED PARAMETER Q : QUESTION

Checking your search strategy

If you want to check which languages you are working in at any time during your on-line search simply type "F" at the asterisk.

Search operators

The new version of the CALL EDIC retrieval language incorporates an advanced facility for refining your searches, for example:
@ (commercial AT sign)
Limits the search so that the system finds only the term entered - e.g. illegal information@
@@ (twice the commercial AT sign)
Indicates to the system that the user requires an exact translation/definition of the term entered - e.g. audit ambiental@@
Many languages contain words which are considered as insignificant words ("mots vides") which must be indicated to the system if a correct translation is to be given. In order to do this the user should enter, for example: *equilibre des* masses which shows that the system must consider "des" as a significant word.

B - EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL SEARCHES

All this will now be put into practice in the example below.
At the CCL prompt (?) the user types:

LANGUAGE(S) OF EURODICAUTOM

EURODICAUTOM is a multilingual data bank. The languages available are : Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. EURODICAUTOM is accessible in Latin-rich and Greek characters. However, users should note that Latin rich characters will not be shown when accessing Eurodicautom using Greek characters. A specific NUA (Network User Address) is required for each.

CREATION OF USER PROFILES

The Define command "D" will define the user's search parameters for the duration of the search in progress. Once the user has logged off the search parameters revert to default.

However, users may create their own user profile which is stored by the system and which can be recalled during any search with the "U" command.

A search profile is set up in the following way:
