SUMMARY OF MINISTER MACCANICO'S PRESENTATION

“THE EUROPEAN CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE GLOBAL INFORMATION SOCIETY”

1) Europe is rich in terms of historical and cultural traditions. Some figures;

The European cultural heritage is constantly enriched with new additions in all fields, according to one evolutionary concept. Diversity is also a distinctive peculiarity in the European culture, inevitably linked to a variety of European languages.

2) Service providers in Europe can easily have access to all sorts of data in the fields of arts, literature, music and sciences, as well as to a variety of customs and languages.

European content industries, in particular SME's, should receive adequate technical and financial support form the Institutions, in order to select and process available data in the field of culture and sciences and have them properly embedded in the networks.

European content industries can be fully competitive at world levels.

3) In Europe, information services over the networks should take diversity into account, in order to avoid misunderstandings or rejection by the users. Services developed, taking into account cultural and linguistic diversity, may better serve electronic “democracy” and accessibility by all to information society.

Worldwide, promotional programs should be launched to assist full deployment of the European cultural services.

4) At the level of the European Union, a serious political effort should be made in support of the European cultural heritage and of the linguistic diversity. Programs should be tailored not only to research purposes but also to application targets.

The development of trans-european networks is essential to spread around the information content. Circular over the networks of cultural and linguistic content, awareness and deployment thereof, should be promoted.
